Step by step
Position alongside the front upright before you begin, the same way you would for any parallel park.
Turn in and reverse into the space, watching both uprights so you don't strike either one.
Use your allowed adjustments to straighten the car and center it between the two uprights.
The rules that decide the score
- This comes first in Pennsylvania (Important) — Pennsylvania's road test starts with parallel parking, into a 24-foot by 8-foot space, before you drive the rest of the route.
- One attempt, three adjustments (Critical) — You get one attempt at the space and no more than three forward-and-back adjustments, parked midway between the uprights.
What ends the test here
Most mistakes cost points you can afford to lose. These do not — they end the drive on the spot, however well the rest went:
- Striking either upright — Hitting either upright, or needing more than three adjustments to park, fails this portion of the test.
