Pennsylvania's Parallel Parking Bay

A 24-by-8-foot space, one attempt, up to three adjustments. Scored on some states' road tests, not all.

Step by step

Pull up beside the lead marker

Position alongside the front upright before you begin, the same way you would for any parallel park.

Reverse in, checking your clearance

Turn in and reverse into the space, watching both uprights so you don't strike either one.

Straighten and center yourself

Use your allowed adjustments to straighten the car and center it between the two uprights.

What ends the test here

Most mistakes cost points you can afford to lose. These do not — they end the drive on the spot, however well the rest went:

Automatic failure
  • Striking either upright — Hitting either upright, or needing more than three adjustments to park, fails this portion of the test.

Where this maneuver differs by state

Road tests are scored by the agency that runs yours, not by a national rule. These are the differences this app has sourced to a named agency:

Frequently asked questions

Pennsylvania's Parallel Parking Bay — is it on every state's road test?

No. Each state's licensing agency sets its own maneuver list. This one is used by some states and not others — check your own agency's page before test day. The road test guide lists the official sources this app checked.

Can Pennsylvania's Parallel Parking Bay fail the road test on its own?

Yes. Everything listed under “What ends the test here” is an automatic failure: it ends the drive immediately rather than costing points you could absorb elsewhere.

How do I practice this before test day?

Drive the maneuver with your supervising driver, and keep the written rules behind it sharp with the free turns, parking and backing module — no account needed.
