Editorial Policy
This page covers the guides — who writes them, how they are sourced, and when they are re-checked. Content methodology covers the practice questions and state facts themselves.
Who writes these
The guides are written and maintained by the DMV Prep editorial team. We publish under the organization rather than a personal byline, and we do not invent author personas or credentials to decorate the page. If something here is wrong, the accountable address is [email protected] and a correction is a reply away.
Where the facts come from
- The state's own licensing agency for anything that varies by state — ages, fees, holding periods, supervised-driving hours, passing scores, and graduated-licensing restrictions. Every such figure on this site links to the page it came from.
- Federal regulations and manuals for CDL rules and traffic-control devices, which do not vary by state.
- State motorcycle manuals and rider-safety curricula for motorcycle content.
Aggregators, other test-prep sites, and forum posts are not sources. Several of them recycle one another's figures, which is how an out-of-date fee outlives the page that first got it wrong.
What "not stated" means in our tables
A cell reading Not stated is not an omission or a zero. It means that state's official source does not publish the figure, or publishes it without enough confidence for us to attribute it. We would rather show the gap, with the state's page linked next to it, than fill it from somewhere we cannot stand behind. A comparison table with no gaps in it has almost certainly been padded.
Dates on every page
Each guide shows when it was published, when it last changed, and when its sources were last checked. Those are three different things and we keep them separate. The updated date is derived from whether the page's content actually changed — republishing without editing does not move it.
What we refuse to publish
We do not publish a pass rate until the sample can support one. Our own threshold is 385 self-reported responses, the size needed for a ±5% margin at 95% confidence, and below it the figure is withheld rather than shown provisionally — see how we measure our pass rate.
We also do not publish rankings of the "hardest" or "most missed" questions without measured evidence behind them. That claim is common in this category and is usually an editorial guess presented as data. When we publish one, it will name the sample size and the period it covers.
Corrections
Email [email protected] with the page, the state, and the official source that contradicts us. Source-backed corrections are prioritized. Substantive fixes are reflected in the page's updated date and, where they matter, in the changelog.

DMV Prep is not affiliated with any state DMV or licensing agency. Nothing here is legal advice, and the linked official source controls if it disagrees with us.
