Parallel Parking — Step by Step
Most common scored maneuver. Scored on most states' road tests.
The goal is a safe, centered final position near the curb without hitting anything or turning the maneuver into a panic. Accuracy matters more than trying to finish fast.
Step by step
Position your car parallel to and about 2–3 feet away from the front parked car, with your rear bumpers aligned.
Turn on your right signal. Check your right mirror, left mirror, and blind spot before reversing.
Slowly reverse while turning the wheel sharply right. Stop when your front is clear of the lead car and your car is at ~45°.
While still reversing, straighten the wheel briefly, then turn left to bring your rear into the space.
When parallel to the curb, straighten your wheels and pull slightly forward to center between the two cars.
