Hill Parking Rules
Uphill and downhill curb rules. Scored on some states' road tests, not all.
The rules that decide the score
- Uphill with a curb: turn wheels LEFT (Critical) — Turn wheels away from the curb (left / toward traffic). If the brakes fail, the curb stops the car from rolling into traffic.
- Downhill with a curb: turn wheels RIGHT (Critical) — Turn wheels toward the curb (right). The car rolls into the curb, not into traffic.
- No curb (uphill or downhill): turn wheels RIGHT (Important) — Turn wheels to the right so the car rolls off the road rather than into oncoming traffic if brakes fail.
- Always use the parking brake (Important) — Set the parking brake before putting the car in Park. Release the parking brake last when leaving — before you release the foot brake.
- Memory trick: LRRL (Tip) — Left-Right-Right-Left: Uphill+curb=Left, Downhill+curb=Right, No curb=Right, tested as a general rule. Many states test this directly on the written exam too.
