3-Point Turn — Step by Step
Also called a K-turn or Y-turn. Scored on some states' road tests, not all.
Step by step
Signal right, check mirrors and blind spots, and pull to the right edge of the road. Come to a full stop.
Signal left. Look left, right, and left again for oncoming traffic. Wait for a clear gap of at least 20–30 seconds.
Accelerate gently while turning the steering wheel sharply left. Stop before reaching the opposite curb or edge.
Shift to reverse. Check behind you. Turn the wheel right and back to the right edge. Stop before reaching the curb.
Shift to drive. Check traffic again. Signal and pull forward in the new direction.
What ends the test here
Most mistakes cost points you can afford to lose. These do not — they end the drive on the spot, however well the rest went:
- Common mistakes — Mounting a curb is usually an automatic fail. Take your time — there's no penalty for being slow, only for unsafe moves.

Can 3-Point Turn fail the road test on its own?
Yes. Everything listed under “What ends the test here” is an automatic failure: it ends the drive immediately rather than costing points you could absorb elsewhere.
