Ohio's Maneuverability Course

A 9-by-20-foot box, five markers, driven forward and back. Scored on some states' road tests, not all.

Step by step

Enter slowly and square

Approach the course slowly and align the car so you have room to work with on both sides.

Drive the course forward

Navigate between the five markers at a slow, controlled speed without touching any of them.

Reverse back through

Reverse back through the same course, checking behind you and keeping the car centered between the markers.

Leave the course in line

Exit parallel to the course rather than at an angle.

The rules that decide the score

What ends the test here

Most mistakes cost points you can afford to lose. These do not — they end the drive on the spot, however well the rest went:

Automatic failure
  • Touching a marker — Running over, knocking down, or removing a marker is an immediate failure, as is stopping inside the course, misjudging your stopping distance, or leaving the course at an angle instead of parallel.

Where this maneuver differs by state

Road tests are scored by the agency that runs yours, not by a national rule. These are the differences this app has sourced to a named agency:

Frequently asked questions

Ohio's Maneuverability Course — is it on every state's road test?

No. Each state's licensing agency sets its own maneuver list. This one is used by some states and not others — check your own agency's page before test day. The road test guide lists the official sources this app checked.

Can Ohio's Maneuverability Course fail the road test on its own?

Yes. Everything listed under “What ends the test here” is an automatic failure: it ends the drive immediately rather than costing points you could absorb elsewhere.

How do I practice this before test day?

Drive the maneuver with your supervising driver, and keep the written rules behind it sharp with the free turns, parking and backing module — no account needed.
