Changing Lanes Under Test Conditions

Mirror, signal, blind spot, move — in that order, every time. Scored on some states' road tests, not all.

Step by step

Check your mirrors

Check the rearview and side mirror on the side you're moving toward.

Signal early

Signal well before you move, giving traffic time to react.

Turn your head and check the blind spot

Glance over your shoulder — mirrors alone don't cover the blind spot, and examiners are watching for the head turn.

Move only when it's clear, then cancel the signal

Move smoothly into the new lane at a matching speed, then cancel your signal.

The rules that decide the score

What ends the test here

Most mistakes cost points you can afford to lose. These do not — they end the drive on the spot, however well the rest went:

Automatic failure
  • Cutting off another vehicle — Moving into a lane without enough space, forcing another driver to brake or swerve, is treated as a serious or automatic failure in most states.

Where this maneuver differs by state

Road tests are scored by the agency that runs yours, not by a national rule. These are the differences this app has sourced to a named agency:

Frequently asked questions

Changing Lanes Under Test Conditions — is it on every state's road test?

No. Each state's licensing agency sets its own maneuver list. This one is used by some states and not others — check your own agency's page before test day. The road test guide lists the official sources this app checked.

Can Changing Lanes Under Test Conditions fail the road test on its own?

Yes. Everything listed under “What ends the test here” is an automatic failure: it ends the drive immediately rather than costing points you could absorb elsewhere.

How do I practice this before test day?

Drive the maneuver with your supervising driver, and keep the written rules behind it sharp with the free turns, parking and backing module — no account needed.
