Illinois vehicle check

SOS checks the car before the drive starts. Tick these off the night before — a vehicle that fails the check ends the appointment before you have driven anywhere.

What ends the Illinois road test immediately

Most mistakes cost you points you can afford to lose. These are different — a critical error ends the drive on the spot, however well the rest of it went:

Illinois grades hill parking and an alley turnabout — not parallel parking. You get three attempts at each exam within a year of paying the application fee, and any traffic violation or dangerous action is an automatic fail. Only the examiner may ride with you; children and pets can't be in the vehicle or left unattended in the facility. Road tests generally stop 60 minutes before closing, aren't given after dark, and can be postponed for unsafe road, weather, or vehicle conditions.
