How to get your permit in Oregon
- At 15+, study the Oregon Driver Manual and pass the knowledge test
- Bring parent/legal guardian signature, identity/address proof, and Social Security information to DMV
- Pass the vision test and receive the provisional instruction permit
- Hold the permit at least 6 months while completing 100 supervised hours, or 50 with approved Driver Ed
- At 16 or 17, pass the drive test or use an approved Driver Ed waiver pathway and follow provisional restrictions
Oregon GDL restrictions for new drivers
- Permit supervision: Provisional instruction permit holders may drive only with a licensed driver age 21+ seated beside them; the supervising driver must have had a license for at least 3 years for the practice to count
- Permit device rule: Permit holders may not use a mobile communication device while operating a motor vehicle, including hands-free accessories
- Provisional first 6 months: For the first 6 months, provisional drivers may not drive with a passenger under 20 who is not immediate family, and may not drive midnight to 5 a.m. unless an allowed exception applies
- Provisional second 6 months: For the second 6 months, provisional drivers may not drive with more than three passengers under 20 who are not immediate family, and the midnight-to-5 a.m. restriction continues unless an exception applies
