The L Restriction

Applied when you do not pass the air brakes knowledge test, or test in a vehicle without air brakes. The one restriction a knowledge test alone can clear.

What it actually stops you doing

A restriction is printed on the licence and is enforceable roadside. Driving outside it is driving outside your licence class, with the same consequences — so an employer will check it before they hire you, whatever your experience.

How to remove it

Pass the air brakes knowledge test (25 questions, 80% to pass), then take your skills test in a vehicle that actually has full air brakes. Do one without the other and the restriction stays.

This is the only CDL restriction you can study your way out of, and the practice test for it is free.
