- Proof of valid Rhode Island registration

Test vehicle requirements
- Valid Rhode Island registration (exceptions: a military-registered vehicle with valid military ID; a driving-school vehicle with out-of-state registration plus a current RI Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate, GU-1338b, on file)
- Valid inspection sticker (waived for vehicles under 2 years old or under 24,000 miles)
- Working directional lights, headlights, brake lights, and hazard lights
- SRS/airbag and ABS warning lights not illuminated
- Acceptable tires
- No illegal aftermarket window tinting
- Not a rental vehicle, antique vehicle, or low-speed vehicle
- No pets or cameras/recording devices in the vehicle
30-day wait to retest
Grounds for immediate failure: any motor vehicle violation, equipment failure or erratic operation, lack of cooperation with the examiner, dangerous inexperience, leaving the designated roadway, dangerous actions, a rolling stop, or a collision. Appointment-only; cancel/reschedule at least 48 hours ahead. The wait escalates for repeat failures — 30 days after the 1st failure, 90 after the 2nd, 180 after the 3rd and beyond. - Stalling somewhere that put the car in danger
